The Tide of Change
The Tide of Change
Lucy founded Sea Synergy Marine Awareness Centre in 2014 and, for over 11 years, has been highlighting ocean health and plastic pollution in the ocean.
The centre’s outreach programme visits local schools educating thousands of children on plastic pollution. Lucy has also been nominated as an Ocean Hero and Ocean Warrior by An Taisce –The National Trust for Ireland
Sustainability Education Programme Manager, Volvo Ocean Race
Following July’s Sky Ocean Rescue documentary that saw the Turn the Tide on Plastic team collect comprehensive data and embark on research on ocean pollution during the Volvo Ocean Race, Volvo and the Rappacioli family have invited Lucy Hunt into their home to get under the skin of how they live and explain the many ways that they can reduce the amount of single-use plastics in their everyday lives. As a marine biologist and creator of a bespoke education programme based on ocean health and plastic pollution, Lucy is the perfect person to open their eyes to the truth about single-use plastics and ocean sustainability.

The race for perfection
In this article, we visit the Volvo Ocean Race Boatyard in Lisbon, Portugal. Here, we meet the team of experts responsible for repairing and re-fitting the entire fleet of Volvo Ocean 65 boats that will compete in the 2017-18 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. We describe each team member’s individual area of expertise and show how the team works together to ensure that each boat is repaired identically, on time and to the highest possible standard. Their expertise in different areas represents the same level of competence you find at a Volvo workshop. We also meet Swedish sailor Martin Strömberg, who won the 2011-12 edition of the race, to find out what a great service programme gives him as a sailor.
