Volvo V60 crowned 2018 Family Car of the Year at inaugural Sunday Times Motor Awards

The new Volvo V60 continues to collect prestigious honours, being named The Sunday Times Family Car of the Year at the first ever News UK Motor Awards.

The News UK Motor Awards celebrate innovation throughout the UK motoring industry, and are judged by readers as well as automotive journalists across News UK's four news outlets – The Sunday Times, The Times, The Sun and talkSPORT.

The latest accolade for the new generation of Volvo's mid-size estate car was announced at an awards ceremony in London on Wednesday. The V60 won from a shortlist featuring rivals from BMW and Jaguar thanks to votes from readers of The Sunday Times' and The Sun's motoring websites.

Will Dron, Editor of The Sunday Times' Driving.co.uk, said: "Volvo has long been a family favourite thanks to its hard-earned reputation for safety and practicality, but in recent years it's been wowing us with stunningly cool designs, too, and the V60 estate has curves in all the right places. Combine that with its Scandi-chic interior, clever storage solutions and other family-friendly features, and it's no wonder our readers voted it their Family Car of the Year."

The V60's success follows on from a glowing review by Driving.co.uk, which praised Volvo for "producing some of the world's coolest cars". The report highlighted the V60's sleek design, the stylish and uncluttered dashboard, and the spacious cabin and boot, concluding that the car "manages an impressive double act" as an "extremely smart executive cruiser and an unfeasibly practical family wagon".

Volvo Cars endorses G7 Ocean Plastics Charter supporting its industry-leading commitment to reducing plastics pollution

Volvo Cars last week joined the G7 Ocean Partnership Summit, one of the most important environmental summits in the world. Volvo Cars is the only car maker to be invited to the G7 summit, underlining the company's position as an industry leader in sustainability.

The summit in Halifax, Canada, brings together governments, businesses and NGOs. Volvo Cars will explicitly endorse and support the G7 Ocean Plastics Charter and will present its own sustainability programme in detail, including its recent Plastics Vision that aims to substantially increase the amount of recycled material used in new Volvo cars.

Volvo Cars has one of the most ambitious sustainability programmes in the automotive industry, with the explicit goal of reducing and minimising its overall environmental impact. Reducing plastics pollution and working towards the use of more recycled materials in its cars is an important element of that strategy.

The G7 charter commits governments to take concrete and ambitious steps towards addressing the global problem of ocean plastics pollution, such as promoting more recycled plastics and reducing plastics pollution in their societies. Volvo Cars is the first and only car maker to endorse the charter.

XC60 takes Towcar of the Year title as Volvo enjoys quadruple success in Caravan and Motorhome Club awards

Volvo has demonstrated the strength in depth of its SUV range with the XC40 and XC60 together winning four honours in the 2019 Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year Competition. The honours, including the overall Towcar of the Year award for the XC60, were presented at a ceremony held at the RAC Club in London.

The Volvos were among 35 vehicles tested by expert judges at the Millbrook proving ground in Bedfordshire. Each car was checked by the club's technical team before being put through their paces by a specialist driving team. Performance was tested and each vehicle's 'caravanability' was assessed, taking into account factors such as the boot space available to carry kit, accessories for a caravan trip and the towball height.

Assessing the XC60, the judges declared they were impressed by the car's "outstanding performance" in terms of acceleration, braking and stability when towing a caravan, showing perfect poise and minimal body roll when towing both at high speeds and on twisty routes. "It also gave one of the most comfortable rides of the entire competition – all in all an ideal car for caravanners," they added.
